FWIW, the etymology of "triage" is to divide into thirds. The idea was
created when battlefield casualties exceeded the care available.
The most badly wounded were deemed to die, no matter what care
was given, so they were ignored. The least wounded were deemed
to be survivable if care was not given, so they too were ignored. The
remaining third, in the middle, were given the available care. I
believe this dates back to World War 1.

Today in an ER, triage determines prioritization of care, but
(hopefully)
the patient today eventually will be cared for.
