First of all, take the harddrive out and pull the data
from it. Hopefully your sweetie has all her program
cd's to reinstall in case she loses something. There
are a number of viruses that totally trash netscape
and chances are her machine has at least one or two.
So after the harddrive data is backed up, put the
harddrive back into her computer and try to repair
Windows XP by starting her computer from the Windows
XP CD-ROM, pressing ENTER to set up Windows XP, and
then pressing R to repair. According to MSs knowledge
base this will repair Windows and its registry but
will still screw up some shared files, user templates
and data. Now, when you are done install and run AVG
and Spybot. Then uninstall Netscape permanently and
install Firefox. There are some big differences in
vulnerability. Last but not least when it is all
working properly, set a system restore point.

This does not take into the account that it could very
well be a hardware malfunction as someone said. But
if it is, at least you have backed up the data.

I hope that helps.
