I used to identify the ISP and send an email to them. I never notify the
spammer unless I know for sure that it's a legit company. The reason for this
is that you only make yourself more likely to get more spam. (People change
email address relatively frequently, so the spammers continously verify the
addresses as valid, no reason to help them.)
You also need to try to ensure that the ISP is actually not one made by
spammers to host spammers. In which case your notification is a waste of
time. Then you need to find out who the uplink ISP is and notify them
instead.
You can see who the traffic goes through to see who their uplink is and
determine what kind of ISP you have. Visit the website and so on.
Always include the whole header every time you notify an ISP. When it
continous to come in you can notify the uplink ISP and give them a summary of
what's going on.
The only problem is that there's so much spam that whereas what I said above
used to work quite well, these days I get the idea that people usually only
bother with more organized anti spam like world wide tracking and
identification of spammers, to take them to court. The last spammer I heard
about was fined something like three billion dollars, at $30 per spam or some
such. They know he can't pay but he's out of business and not allowed to
touch a computer for years.
In the early days it was stupidity and so on. These days it's very organized
and well executed because of the money involved.
Ideally everyone would take a small course on spam and ripoffs before going
online. It's these people who do respond to spam that makes it worth while to
spam.
