I use the "Festival" text-to-speech system pretty heavily on my computer,
and ran into a pronunciation that I can't fix. When I ask it to say
"February", it comes out "Feb'ary" or some approximation thereof. I'm used
to dealing with mispronunciation; I've dealt with it wrt proper names, and
dialect/accent issues before (but it's usually pretty good about saying a
word correctly).
I edited /usr/share/festival/dicts/cmu/cmudict-0.4.out and changed "ax"
(schwa, I think) to "uw" (\oo\ as in "food") so the relevant line read
("february" nil (((f eh b) 1) ((y uw) 0) ((eh r) 1) ((iy) 0)))
There was a nearby line for the abbreviation "feb", so I changed that too.
(Yes, lots of parens. Go whine at LISP's designer.) It still used the old
pronunciation. Hmm. I changed the spelling to "februarz", NOW it uses the
fixed one. So, it's apparently matching words to a list and pronouncing
them algorithmically if they're on it. How can I find this list and remove
(or comment out) "february"?
