Stock kernel in the 2.6.18 area, as I recall. You actually think it's a
driver? I was thinking hardware. There is one particular oddity-- my
wife uses a tablet instead of a mouse, and the driver being used is the
stock one for X (and probably old, since they don't ship tablet drivers
with X anymore). I hate that thing, because every time I upgrade the OS,
I have to compensate for that particular driver (either recompile it or
something similar). It doesn't appear in top, but I'm not sure it would
as a driver. My only concern about killing drivers is that sooner or
later I'm going to hit something that's going to whack the snot out of
the O/S, and then its speed won't be an issue, because the O/S won't
perform without it.

The other thing I'll say about the tablet is that on a prior computer,
which was *not* slow, she also ran that tablet. (Different driver,
probably, though.)
