Asterisk is an OpenSource phone system that is compatible with both the
traditional type of phone lines like T1's and analog lines, and compatible
with voice over IP (VoIP).
Being a computer program it's limitations are pretty much only your own
imagination. It has been active for some seven years now I think, time flies,
and has taken the world by storm. Many traditional phone companies are now
using it and many upstart service providers use it.
As a telephone type product it's not without it's barriers as it is entirely
different from normal computer administration. People often spend six months
trying to get up to speed. There is a distribution called Trixbox that is
perfect for homes and small business needs where the person configuring it
can do so with less than normal know how.
Trixbox is able to cover many of the features of Asterisk by extensive use of
macros. These macros are both the good and the bad as they convolute the
dialplan (that which says how the system handles calls) by often adding over
100 lines where three lines would otherwise do.
Meanwhile once you get it up and running it is a really great system.
You can read more about it at http://voip-info.org/wiki-Asterisk
