There is DATerm on the case, but I can try a physical terminator in case
DATerm is fried.

I have a real Mac here, but it's ancient, I rarely use it, and it takes up
room so I plan to give it away. (Any takers here?)

No, HFS+ support came in 8.1. Maybe they backported it via an extension.
