My dad recently had a similiar problem on his Gutsy system. It turned out that there were a couple alsa config files in his home directory that were messing things up.

Look in the root of your home directory for files called .alsaconf .asound (or something similiar). If you see them, delete them (or just rename them if you want a backup). Then log out and log back in again. Hopefully that will clear things up for you.
