Chris you should go for quad core ;-)

If you want the best desktop you can buy for the money I want to
recommend one of the new Phenom Chips (QUAD CORE) The cpu isn't as fast
as the core duo, but it's $100 less and fits in an AM2 socket (cheap mobos).

If all you do is game more spare cores won't mater... but if you develop
and want to run APACHE + Tomat + VMWARE( x VMs) + Email Client + KDE /
GNOME + Mp3 player + Game of Warcraft 3 + samba + routing + compiling +
jbidwatcher + pidgin + skype + firefox + picasa + Thunderbird (this is
what's running on my desktop right now) and experience 0 lag... go for
the quad core.

I have a dual core AMD chip and will be upgrading to a quad core in the
next couple of months. I'm not sure which way I'll go then but if I
were buying right now, the new Phenom is a great buy. These are the new
core to, the first run was recalled for a logic bug(the first core 2
duos had some logic issues as well).

  MD Phenom 9500 Agena 2.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket
  AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor - $189.99

  IMHO

                Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz 4M shared L2 Cache
    LGA 775 65W
    /

/Dual-Core Processor - People have been overclocking this sucker to
3.85GHz if you are into that sort of thing

        HTH
