I have a HP PSC 1350 and have had the same problem.
Years ago, in whitebox linux, I ended up using the HP Deskjet 3320 driver
In other newer distros
1. Shutdown your PC
2. Shutdown your printer
3. Unplug your printer
4. Wait 1 minute
5. Plug your printer in
6. Power on your printer
7. Power on your PC
8. Try again
9. If no joy, try booting different live CDs with printer powered up first.
10. I use several PCs and multiple OSs.
