Turns out that if USB is enabled in the BIOS, it does that flashing-cursor
thing. So now I'm up with no USB, EXCEPT for some reason the USB-serial
thingy (pl2303) works.
Maybe if I fudged the boot order it would successfully boot from the hard
drive or CD before it hung looking for a USB drive. No idea why it would
fail, or if it did indeed fail. It might that be a hub went haywire, or a
cable's subtly damaged.
