Somebody replied saying his wife had the same problem but never found a
solution. I lost that message (sorry). But a partial answer is: invoke
nautilus as "nautilus --no-desktop". That's clunky and I haven't yet found
a pref file. If I have to I'll write an alias to do it.

Solutions for the other half of the problem are: turn on "save on exit" (I
think mine is, but I'll check to be sure) and make sure ~/.gnome2 and
everything in it is readable and writable by you (in fact everything's
eben.eben and u+rw).

Two atoms are walking along. Suddenly, one
stops. The other says, "What's wrong?" "I've lost
an electron." "Are you sure?" "I'm positive!"
