OK, I did a ps -AL and found 3 pulseaudio apps running, did a killall and
now it all works. Cheee.... why break something that works???

Skype now works
VLC continues to work
and the audio recorder now can play back files, I found that it
would record it just would not play back.

Looks like Pulseaudio does not want to play nice with every one
else...
