well, it didn't used to do this. would that be an answer?

my brain dredging to figure out how one tells if something is installed only comes up with something involving rpm.

well there may be something in /usr/share/doc/packages
I remembered YaST
it's initializing
downloading crap from germany
15 minutes later
it's still downloading

having installed it, it must now be there, but i don't know what to do with it and maybe it's not graphical?
