Level and muting are independent. That's gotten me before. Plus, other
switches can affect whether you get sound or not. Play with them; you may
have to do 2^n trials for n switches. Frex, on mine:

Headphone LFE 1 off
Headphone Center 1 off
Tone off
3D Control - Switch off
Mic Boost (+20dB) off
Mic Select Mic1
IEC958 Optical Raw off
External Amplifier off
SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack off
Sigmatel 4-Speaker Stereo off
Sigmatel Output Bias off
Sigmatel Surround Phase Inversion Playback off

But, "Sigmatel Surround" is unmuted and at -27 dB, and "IEC958 LiveDrive" is
at -17.6 dB. Hmm, I wonder if they need to be. Time for more
experimentation, methinks.

Anyway, I found the proper setting for the switches and sliders by trying
various settings and seeing what, when changed, made some or all of the
speakers silent.

Only required to play a CD where the drive does the D->A conversion, and all
the card does is amplify the analog stream it's given. Without that
connection, you can usually play a CD by having the drive read it normally
and your sound card do a D->A conversion and amplify it.
