   For the X system, I have used sweep, audacity and something named like ee ears, it is a
gnome program and I run Slackware 100% and they dropped gnome support a few years ago.
Drat. I can't think of any LINUX program that can do it. I think this is the kind of
task where GUI programs work best.
audacity = Audio editor for recording, slicing, and mixing audio.
