You can find so-called "certified" Windows admins who are 10 years old
and know nothing.

OTOH, I don't think there's much market for a "Unix/Linux" admin with a
grey beard who sneers at proprietary OSes, either.

A truly proficient admin knows how to deal with all the OSes an employer
or client is likely to have around. That would probably be Windows, Mac,
and (especially on servers) Linux and/or Unix.

Starting with the assumption that any moron can deal with Windows, a
smart employer is obviously going to prefer someone with Linux
experience who can also handle Windows over someone who can only deal
with Windows.

Surveys by Foote Partners and other industry research firms confirm
this. The market for "Linux admins" is as dead as the market for
"Windows admins." Today's employers want general sysadmins, not
specialists.
