The Woody net-install (which I think is considered *unofficial*) still
uses the old installer.

I personally prefer the autodetect stuff to be turned off. Shouldn't a
user have an understanding of what hardware configuration they are
installing on? Adding autodetect dumbs down the user -- take M$ products
as an example. How can they compile future kernels if they don't
understand their hardware setup?

I run from the testing source on all my non-production/non-critical
machines. Other than a few minor hiccups, everything is real stable. I
can always compile the newest software releases if the package progress
is too far behind (although this sometimes screws up future
dependencies).
