It's simple -- greed.

microsoft could not survive if they produced quality software. Defective
software is their foundation. Stable systems that just work present no
incentive for the great unwashed ...err.. un-informed masses to pay
upgrade money for the "newest, latest *IMPROVED*" (yet still defective)
  version. As better, competing software becomes available at a lower
price or free, microsoft will begin to die or be forced to adapt. All
they know how to produce is crap and they have become too big to change.

Be patient, cheer up, look at the signs(follow the money), the days of
the beast are numbered.
