I think you are confusing "extended partition" with "logical partition".
The Linux Partition HOWTO at
http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/partition/partition-3.html#logical says:
"The primary partition used to house the logical partitions is called an
extended partition". There is further explanation and an example.
