Some additional comments...

You can be sure that microsoft will officially, or unofficially (that means
there sales people and evangelists) use the conflict and SCO's liberal use of
the word Linux in the suit to use FUD to disuade people from moving to Linux
or get people to return to the microsoft fold.
People don't like uncertainty, and without a doubt, some of the mud from this
lawsuit will stick to Linux for a period of time.

The best thing that could happen is there will be such a backlash from SCO
customers, developers, sales channels, plus everyone else that their stock
will go through the floor and they'll go bankrupt.
Perhap's IBM could then get their assets and IP for little or nothing and end
the farce once and for all.

I don't think microsoft can get SCO (unless they do it through a shell
company) as I vauguely remember something, years ago, that they legally
agreed to keep out of the Unix market in another lawsuit they lost.

As far as I am aware...

BSD 4.4-lite code is free of encumbrances.
Anything over 20-years old (patent law) is free.

College football is a game which would be much more interesting if the faculty
played instead of the students, and even more interesting if the trustees
played. There would be a great increase in broken arms, legs, and necks,
and simultaneously an appreciable diminution in the loss to humanity.
