I found a pretty good article to explain what out
there in respects to RAID implementations. It should
give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

http://www.unt.edu/benchmarks/archives/2001/december01/raid.htm

IMHO, I wouldn't consider running anything but RAID5.
Other RAID setups suffer from some tradeoff between
performance, reliability and cost. Plus, a designed
file system and a good disaster recovery plan with
backups to tape/cdr/or network storage can take the
place of the functionality provided by RAID0,1.

Two things to keep in mind:
1. RAID 0(striping) is not redundant. The
performanced gained by these systems is achieved all
from saving bits of time in moving the arm to read
data... ie. one arm takes X + R + X + R to read two
bits of info where two arms can do this in parallel.

2. Mirroring does provide decent redundancy, but does
not provide a performance boost. But, the redunancy
achieved here is only as good as the origonal data.
If the source drive gets fouled, then the backup is
fouled also.

I am curious as to what the goal is for you in trying
out RAID systems. I achieved a considerable
performance boost by adding multiple drives to my
system and designating each drive for a specific
function. ie... a smaller faster drive for the swap
partition, and a medium drive for the system, and a
medium performance high capacity drive for the /user
partition. This simply wouldn't achieve the desired
results if I were running a database server where many
processes were being read from a relatively small
space on a data drive.. for that RAID5 is hands down
the best (and most expensive) option, but for my
purpose the setup I have works wonderfully. In the
end, the solution for you has everything to do with
the answer to the question of "what is it that you are
trying to do?"

Good Luck,
RH Eanes
