Ian probably provided the best answer for this. But I would suggest
something additional. The Running Linux book, while good, is probably a
little dated and what you're encountering seems a little exotic for that
book. I'd suggest instead the USB HOWTO, if you want to know more about
setting up and troubleshooting USB. You can install the HOWTOs (and
FAQs) from your distribution CD or go to http://www.tdlp.org to get
them.
