Besides from replying to the cCommerce thread with this new thread : )
I'd say you are running a 533MHz machine with the current heavy duty WM's
like GNOME and KDE which requires a bit more horsepower. Since your CPU
needs to help the video card that will also slow down the system.

Not until I put 512M in a 1.3G machine does it run at a decent speed.

What exactly are you doing when it is slow. Has it slowed down from before?
Did you change anything like running up2date and then it ran slower?

5400rmp drives are too slow too. Modern 7200 rpm drives with decent buffer
size (i.e min 4MB) makes KDE run a lot faster.

Run top as root and see what the load is both in runlevel 3 and 5. No doubt
it is no longer idling along in runlevel 5. If so your system is not up to
running those two window managers. Try any other as they don't need as much
power.
