I work with SuSE servers at work (runlevel 3, no X), and can't attest to the Desktop experience. If you are really interested in some differences between RedHat and SuSE in general from a non-graphical perspective, contact me offlist and I can tell you more. I never did install SuSE at home because I am super-cheap, and it's easier to be super-cheaper with other distros.

I have been using SuSE as my preferred distro since 5.2 (currently using
a mix of 7.x and 9.0 in addition to a few other distros). It has all of
the polish (esp. installation and administration) of RedHat, but they
seem less 'we gotta be different' than RedHat. YaST is a pretty nice
tool if you want graphical administration. The 'Professional' version
is 7 CDs and 1 DVD (use whichever you prefer for your install), which
indicates that they have included hunreds of packages on their media.
SuSE has a KDE-bias (though they also ship and install GNOME) and is one
of the few distros that you can recommend to anyone who is
computer-literate enough to install Windows98 from scratch (I like
Debian and used to love Slackware, but those are not as
newbie-friendly). One downside to SuSE has been "YOU" (no, not you
personally, "YaST Online Update") which is supposed to automatically (at
your discretion) download and install updates to the packages on your
system. YOU at least up until 7.4 has never worked well! I have heard
rumors that 9.0 finally has a usable YOU, but I haven't tried it (the
absolute best-of-breed for this kind of tool is Debian's apt-get (not
the RPM version, the .deb version)).
