Do your "regular" networking protocols work without fail? (http, ssh,
ftp or whatever else you use) I and others on this list have compiled
and use GAIM 0.76 and chat regularly. I have people on my "buddy list"
using Yahoo, MSN, Jabber and ICQ simultaneously.

If the typical networking protocols work fine, I would look to compiling
it by hand. Matt Moen has a clever axiom in regard to GAIM being one of
those things "best compiled by hand," but I cannot remember it verbatim.
