Eric,

Thanks for setting me off in the right direction. It really seems to be
a "black art". In alsamixer I was thinking that the two bars
represented the right and left channels. Apparently that is not so. I
finally got the CD to sound correctly (under the CD setting by having
the left "bar" much higher than the right "bar".

Anyway, it would be really nice if there were some sort of descriptive
way to set up alsa. What you need to do now is have a CD playing and
listen to what happens when you change the settings.

Now. it would be really nice if there were some way to set up the volume
for all of the system to play sounds at the same volume without
fiddling with all of the different controls.

Thanks again. Now at least I can hear the CD somewhat correctly.
