I don't know enough about Corel to be able to comment authoritatively on
what they have or have not done right, aside from limited examples. On
the other hand, I can say this:

Corel Draw is (was?) an excellent product, at least as recently as two
or three years ago. My experience is that it is a far easier product
with which to work than Adobe Illustrator. Its interface was much more
intuitive, and most illustration tasks required less monkeying around.
There were, of course, a few things that Illustrator did more easily
(and I tended to keep both Illustrator and Draw around back when I
needed an illustration program handy most of the time, because each was
better at some things than others), but overall Draw was the program
that formed the rock-solid basis of my illustration software use.
Illustrator became, for me, a highly specialized, extremely bloated tool
for very limited tasks, because that was all it could do better than Draw.
