OK, so firefox is acting wrong. My guess is either it is relying on an
internal list mapping extension -> handler, or maybe a system-wide
mime.types list (might be in /etc). Or both, with the internal list
overriding the global one.

My guess is that the caller (firefox in this case) gets the string
firefox %1
to open unidentified attachments, and replaces '%1' with the filename. For
filenames with spaces, the '%1' needs to be in quotes. To the user, there
would be no change (except that attachments with spaces would work).
