Since you are setting this up for a "friend" why not install Debian?
Debian will definitely fit on a 2 gig HDD and it is the easiest distro
extant to upgrade, via apt-get tools. Your friend won't have to do
anything, after you do the initial install. Just set up a cron job to
automagically update everything for him/her.
