NDISwrapper is a very big pain to me...however some have no problem
with it and it is a "simple" workaround.
The atheros driver works well...what you might be able to do is find a
binary distribution of it for use in specific distros...for instance
SUSE 9.1+ has support for it with SUSE 9.2 and 9.3 having better
support. IBM uses that chipset in their stinkpads...so they may have a
driver stashed away on their site.
The madwifi driver is the open source version for atheros chipsets,
however, they only provide source...no binaries. You can download the
source and compile it, but that isn't something that is always simple.
