   My understanding is that a pdf file is merely a compressed ps file, so a
special program would have to be developed to edt a compressed file without
first uncompressing it.

   Any LINUX program that displays a pdf should "print it to a file" in the ps form.
ps files can be converted to image or text files depending on how they were created.
I don't know anything that will load a ps file to edit it.
