I found this link on the Ubuntu forums that suggests you have a
.Trash-username file on your external drive. If you delete that file,
the poster suggests, it will unmount properly.

You didn't state what type of filesystem you're using on this external
drive, but here is a fix for a external NTFS-formatted drive (scroll
