I have had awesome luck on ebay. If you don't need gig lan, you can get a
really nice used (or sometimes new) 24-port switches for less than $20.00.
I got a used Nortel Baystack 24-port switch for about $10.50 that has done
really well for me, and I also got a brand-spanking-new, in -the-box, Nortel
Contivity, 8-port router for less than $20.00 after shipping. I haven't set
up the router yet, but I've thought of reflashing it with netbsd if I don't
like everything that it does. It's set up with a cf card hooked to an IDE
channel on the MB, and it has a caddy for a 3.5" drive, a dimm slot to
expand the ram, and all kinds of goodies. My Netgear has a wire loose or
something, because it will randomly crash every once in a while, and that's
why I wound up getting the Contivity. But, there's my $.02. Ebay. If you
narrow your search to local hits only, you can often avoid shipping charges.
